Is that a stick or a snake?

A lot of you may be asking that question over the next few weeks as the weather continues to warm and our cold-blooded friends become more active. It’s a fair question since snakes are native to all the states PCA currently works. But the real question becomes is that a stick or a poisonous snake?

Poisonous or venomous snakes can be very dangerous especially to those working in isolated areas. With quick medical intervention snake bites are not usually deadly but can be painful and cause long-lasting or even permanent damage. Always be on the lookout for snakes when working in the field. Be cautious when walking through high grass or areas surrounding water. Listen for clues that a snake might be nearby, hissing or a rattling sound. Snakes are normally not aggressive, but if they feel threatened (or stepped on) they may attack.

Venombyte is a great source to tell you all the venomous snakes in your state, but a good rule of thumb is to stay away from all snakes. You should never try to catch or kill a snake on a project site. If there’s a nuisance snake on your site, contact the proper authorities to have it removed or relocated.

What if you do have a snake bite on site?
